It may be summer... But LASER never quits

Just because it's summer, doesn't mean that robotics is over. This summer, LASER 3284 hosted and participated in a series of outreach events, including the FTC® camp, Run/Walk for the Fallen, the Mobile Food Pantry, Show Me Robots at the State Fair, and the Ozark Mini Maker Faire. Hosted by LASER 3284, the FTC Camp allowed for LASER and other participating schools' future FTC® students to refine their programming and design skills for the upcoming season. Camdenton LASER also assisted and participated in the Run/Walk for the Fallen, which recognizes and respects Missouri's fallen soldiers, and volunteered at The Mobile Food Pantry, which delivers groceries directly to communities in need of food. LASER hosted the 10th annual Show Me Robots at the State Fair, where all four progressions of FIRST® were demonstrated and had mini competitions with Knob Noster Stealth Panther 6424, Sedalia Team SCREAM 4522, and St. Charles Lutheran Roboteers 4329. LASER also displayed all four progressions of FIRST® at the Ozark Mini Maker Faire, where people share the things they have created with their community. Ultimately, LASER had an busy summer full of events, and we are excited that we helped start several new FIRST® teams in the Central MO Region.

Public Relations

With half of the week affected by weather, LASER members working on awards went into overdrive. The website had a few necessary updates throughout the course of the week. LASER began finalizing the Entrepreneurship Essay and is getting close to submission.

During several days of icy weather, LASER members stayed the weekend at the school to work on the robot. Because the team members stayed the weekend, very little time was lost in the shop. The robot was assessed for any design flaws as well as possible changes that may need to occur.

The Mentor Spotlight for this week is Linnea Vance. She is a Secretary for the Department of Gifted Education in our district and has supported the team at every opportunity. She spends countless hours organizing meals for the team during build season. As a mentor for over three years she has volunteered at all of the events we host.

Public Relations

The group working on Chairman's has been busy writing and editing the script and presentation. The Chairman's Essay will likely be submitted by the end of this week. LASER's Secretary and Treasurer are working to complete the Entrepreneurship Award Essay. A LASER team member has begun finalizing LASER's Code of Ethics.

Robot

Several aspects of the robot have been completed. Metal pieces were sent to AJ Manufacturing to be cut, and they arrived this week to be put to use on the construction of the robot. The fabricators are moving very quickly on the completion of the robot. As a result, the programmers have been able to work on more specific aspects of code as the robot becomes and more finalized.

Mentor Spotlight

Bryan Vance is the mentor under this week’s mentor spotlight. Bryan has been a mentor for three years. He offers a unique insight in building the robot and aids the team in the construction of game field elements. Bryan works for Ameren Missouri, an electric company based in St. Louis. Bryan is prepared for Power Up and wants us to "ad-Vance" in the competition this season!

LASER Build Season Week 3

The Code of Ethics for the LASER team is very near completion. Members of the team participated in an activity to write the Fundamental Canons. Week 3 of build season was an incredibly busy and a productive time for LASER. The team members working on Chairman’s began story boarding and finalizing the essay itself.

Mentor Spotlight

Troy Beard is the deserving individual under Week Three’s Mentor Spotlight. Troy has been a LASER mentor for the past nine years. He assists members with programming and has become an essential part of the LASER family. Troy works as a Software Engineer at ITW EAE. His impacts over the years make him a perfect example of how mentors can change lives.

Robot

LASER is well underway with the construction of the robot. We are incredibly excited about the progress of our CAD designs thus far. Our Fabrication is moving along swiftly thanks to the many members involved in the process.

The LASER team members writing the Chairman’s Essay are currently making great strides towards completing the essay, and are deep into the editing process. LASER is also working on updating the current website and is almost completed with its’ development. Additionally, a LASER team member will be presenting to the team in regarding the production of LASER’s own Code of Ethics.

Robot

Despite two snow days this week, build season has been very productive for LASER. Several prototypes have been created, tested, and tweaked throughout the course of this week. The programmers are adapting to terminology changes that were made this year, and will be spending most of this week making the necessary adjustments.

Mentor Spotlight

Mentor Dennis Harmon has found himself under this week’s mentor spotlight. Dennis first began mentoring when his eldest son joined the team, which also happened to be LASER’s first year. Since then he has volunteered to serve as a judge at numerous FIRST® official events: an FTC® Inspector: and has been an FRC® Inspector for Regionals, the MO State Championship, and the St. Louis World Championship. He has also mentored at the FRC® and FTC® level. He uses his knowledge, as an electrical engineer, to “Power Up” LASER for this year’s challenge!

Laser build season week 1

LASER was incredibly excited to begin the 2018 Power Up season. During Week One we began to brainstorm and breakdown ideas for Chairman's. Team pictures were taken and personality buttons designed for this year's team members. We also made time to certify all of our members who needed CPR certifications. A LASER team member is also working to formulate a code of ethics that the team will plan to update every year.

Kickoff turned out to be an eventful day full of brainstorming and sketching for the whole team. LASER printed manuals and began to formulate ideas surrounding strategy and general game play. We then broke up into specific groups to make design ideas and later addressed them with the entire team present. The team immediately began prototyping, and developing different aspects of the overall design.

This week’s mentor spotlight is Colleen Armstrong. Colleen, is an Americorp VISTA through FIRST®. Colleen assists with LASER FLL teams at Hawthorn. She also mentors the FRC team. Colleen is a role model for our teams and always shows exemplary Gracious Professionalism. She is an active volunteer and is consistently focused on building capacity for FIRST® in the Central MO Region.
